    Hi, just looking for some help, please. 7mins into this video it explains longitude of 073.561 divided by 15 degrees = 4.929. When I do this calculation I get 4.904. What am I doing wrong here, thank you

    I'm sure that many of the very "Old" tables could be used without 🤔 copyright concerns. For example: H.O. 208 first appeared in 1928. H.O. 211 appeared in 1931. And the 9 Volume set of H.O. 214 wasn't fully complete untill sometime in the 1940's!!!! Plus; Mick Pepperday invites "Navigators" to freely copy his "Sight Reduction Forms" for "personal and Educational use". He has a muti-use form that I've used for decades. It is perfect to reduce a sight (with high accuracy!) via my Ti-30 calculator. Even the "Original" 1976 version of the Ti-30 can be used! (I'm a bit of a collector, and have several "Ancient" examples on hand of both early calculators and computers 🖥)

    I finally understand now after taking a pen, paper, and ruler and mapping this out. So if I understand correctly, the first LOP gives you the set of all possible positions you could be at 2200 from the azimuth to the tower. Simple enough. Then, after 30 minutes, assuming your ground speed and course was correct, you know the new line of all possible positions you could be at 2230. (Take the first LOP and advance it using your course and speed). However, the other LOP you get from the azimuth to the tower at 2230 is ALSO a set of all possible positions you could be at (you HAVE to be somewhere on that line). By taking the intersection of those two lines, you can find your position both at 2230 and 2200 because you must be at a point on both lines. This is really cool geometry, I only wish I figured it out on my own! Oh well.

    After much trial and error, I learned this the hard way in a 62’ narrow boat. No real current but plenty of windage. A few weeks ago, aboard ‘Britannia’ in Kiel, I watched in awe as the thousand foot ship was rotated 180 degrees in a 1200 foot wide channel.

    I would like to pose this question that was asked of me during a recent interview. You are following a TSS lane on a power driven vessel, and being overtaken by a Sailing vessel in sight of you. Risk of collision exists. Which Rule applies to this situation? Rule 18 Responsibilities Rule 13 Overtaking Rule 12 Sailing Vessels Rule 10 TSS I was only allowed to choose one option. I decided to go with 10, though in reality, you can't say it's either 10 or 13, as both of them would be applied in this situation and they don't even contradict one another as in both rules, the overtaking vessel would have to give way, which in this case is the sailing vessel.

    Excellent, simple presentation. With one exception. Are you using proper terms? Tide is the vertical movement of water. Current is the horizontal movement of water. Given how often those terms are used in error, I completely understand how that crept into your otherwise superb presentation.

    Nice, but how does determining the angle of a celestial body (sun, star etc) which are in motion as is the earth allow you to determine your latitude/longitude ? I was watching this documentary on the Titanic and the relationship of other ships in the area reporting icebergs and referencing the lat/long of those. How are they able to calculate those fixes ? Also what did they do during periods of overcast skies ? Thanks !!

    • @marcg1686
      @marcg1686 2 місяці тому

      You have to note the exact time at which the altitude of the celestial body was measured. Using that information you can determine the geographic position of the celestial body. A bit of spherical geometry allows you determine where you are relative to the celestial body's position.

    North of the equator latitude is a positive number from 0 to 90, south of the equator latitude is a negative number from 0 to -90. Longitude is positive east of the Prime Meridian in London, and negative west of London, until 180 degrees from London where -180 and +180 meet. These describe the same position: N 30 W 80 is the same as 30,-80 S 30 E 80 is the same as -30,80 You can enter in the numeric string into the location field of your map app and it will move to that GPS position. The opposite side of the Earth from any position is the same latitude with the opposite polarity and the latitude is 180 degrees different from the original location. The points are known as antipodes of each other. The position 45,90 or N 45 E 90 has an antipode of -45,-90 or S 45 W 90 The longitude of the antipodes will always be 180 degrees different from the original point but with opposite polarity, but from 0 or 180 degrees the polarity of the antipode is irrelevant.

    I’m new to this channel. And nautical navigation in general. Great content. I’m rowing across the Atlantic this December for charity and have been training in Portland/Weymouth where the tides when rowing really influence what you can and cannot do.. With this rule, is it safe to assume that the tide will be stronger at those times when 3 blocks are represented?

  • @smith1760
    @smith1760 3 місяці тому

    Good day, so if we are PDV and we have let's say NUC vessel crossing from our port side we can easily alter to port? Because even if rule 17 says that we should not alter to port side - it is applied between two PDVs, but the NUC is a different status from PDV, correct?
